Take the stock or my redo of stock "destroyed.dds".

Paste in over unit's texture (remove wheel halos first), as _new layer_ [paint.net = ctrl+shft+V] 

Invert/rotate it occas.

Layer/properties/ slider down to 150.

"glow or overlay".

Save.

Do an another one entirely even ligher [maybe 'adjustments/curves/luminosity' up], rotated differently than the first.

Layer/properties/ slider even lower (50)

"difference".

Save.

Resize to 256.

DONE

Sometimes...

-[paint.net=] 'Adjustments/ Level' move both sliders until you see flames.

Or 

-Copy and paste bits from the stock or my original redo of stock. Then clone tool bits around over things (avoiding wheels and the like).
